Justinian was the emperor of the Byzantine Empire (Eastern Roman Empire) and as the emperor, he restored control over lost territories such as Italy, Dalmatia, Northern Africa, and the southern coast of Spain.
Justinian also began to rebuild Constantinople, which suffered damage from a revolt. He rebuilt the city walls and also built schools, hospitals, law courts, and churches. The most famous church was Hagia Sophia. After being rebuilt, Constantinople was again a busy and working city. |

The legacies of Justinian was rebuilding Constantinople, taking Christian leadership, being involved with building many new architecture. He also reformed the Roman law and made it Justinian's Code and ordered the construction of Hagia Sophia, which was completed in A.D. 538. It became the center of the Greek Orthodox Church for a number of centuries. This massive cathedral still stands today in Istanbul, and remains one of the largest and most impressive churches in the world.
Justinian also encouraged music, arts, and drama. As a masterful builder himself, Justinian commissioned new roads, bridges, aqueducts, baths, and a variety of other public works. Justinian is considered a saint by the Eastern Orthodox Church nowadays, even though a good amount of Orthodox Christians don’t agree with his sanctification. When Emperor Justinian died, his wife, Empress Theodora ruled the Byzantine Empire in 527. In 532, rioters came and threatened to overturn the government. Theodora urged Justinian not to flee and she herself refsed to leave nd stayed to put down the rebellion. Her courage inspired Justinian and his generals to put down the rebellion. Later, Theodora had laws passed that helpde women. She founded a home to care for poor girls. She also offered protection to religious minorities. |
